THE Atlanta Falcons made most of the headlines at last week's NFL Draft for all the wrong reasons, and one analyst has dismissed their efforts to compare themselves to the Green Bay Packers.

The Falcons took Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit last week.

That raised eyebrows throughout the NFL world as Atlanta had recently signed quarterback Kirk Cousins from the Minnesota Vikings in a four-year, $180 million deal.

Providing Cousins stays healthy, Penix will likely not see action as a starter for years to come.

The Falcons attempted to explain the move by comparing it to what the Green Bay Packers did in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Packers selected Jordan Love in the first round of that draft to be a backup to Aaron Rodgers.

NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah wasn't buying that however when he appeared on the Pat McAfee Show.

"They came out and used the Green Bay model as their explanation," Jeremiah said.

"I felt like then and I feel like now the same way, which is that's apples and oranges.

"Kirk Cousins hasn't played a game there.

"He has no equity with his teammates, he has no equity with the organization, no equity with the city.

"The first bad game that Kirk Cousins has – he hasn't done anything for them yet. Now you're creating this whole dynamic of, 'OK, where's the next guy, we've got a No. 8 pick here waiting to come in.

"So that dynamic is interesting to me and that could be combustible more so than what was happening there with Green Bay."

McAfee, as is his trademark, didn't hold back with his views.

The presenter dismissed the move as "stupid" as he cited a number of areas, including teammate chemistry, fiscal, and strategy.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris has defended the move in recent days.

"We came up with a decision, this is what we plan to do," Morris said.

"And Kirk does not have to look over his shoulder every time he throws a bad pass. Like, that is not the case.

"So, I know I'm going to have to tell you guys once or twice that that is not the case.

"Like, we are here to go win, and we are here to go win it all. We are here to win as much as we can win."

Morris replaced the fired Arthur Smith in January.

The Falcons finished 7-10 in the 2023 NFL season, for third place in the NFC South.
